What you need to know about solar hot water system servicing
All storage type hot water systems require a service once every 5 years to ensure the appliance continues to operate efficiently and safely. During your service
- The tempering valve and pressure relief valve must be replaced.
- We recommend that the element and thermostat be replaced.
- If gas boosted, the gas booster pressure should be checked.
- The water temperature and water pressure should be tested.
- The system should be inspected for water leaks.
- The wiring should be inspected.
- If a pump is installed, the pump speed should be checked.
- The roof and tank sensor wires inspected.
- The controller should be inspected.
- The insulation around the pipes in the roof should be inspected.
- The state of the collector panels and tubes inspected.
- For systems with roof mounted tanks, the heat transfer fluid should be checked and refilled.
- The technician should advise on ways to increase solar efficiency.
What about the sacrificial anode in the storage tank?
In Canberra it is not necessary to replace the sacrificial anode in glass lined steel tanks/vitreous enamel tanks. In Canberra’s climate, there is less of an issue with corrosion than with expansion and contraction. We have found vitreous enamel tanks that are 28 years old. They have never had an anode replaced and they were manufactured with a 5 year warranty. On the other hand, we have found split stainless steel tanks that are 9 years old.
