Hot Water Systems
Sacrificial Anodes
Do I need to replace the sacrificial anode in my storage hot water system if I live in Canberra or Queanbeyan
As a general rule, it is not necessary to replace the anode in your hot water system if you are on tank water or connected to ICON’s or Queanbeyan City Council’s water supply. This is because our water supply has low mineral content and therefore corrosion is not an issue. If you were to replace the anode, I would suggest once every 10 years would be sufficient.
If you are using bore water I would recommend that the anode be replaced once every 5 years.

Stainless Steel Versus Glass Lined Tanks
Will stainless steel hot water tanks out last glass lined storage tanks in the Canberra Region?
My experience suggest that the glass lined tanks will last longer than stainless steel storage tanks. Rust is not an issue in this region. However, because of our climatic conditions, expansion and contraction inside the storage tanks is a factor that leads to metal fatigue. The stainless tanks are thinner than glass lined tanks and stainless steel is more brittle.
Gas Continuous Flow / Instant Gas Versus Gas Storage
Is gas continuous flow hot water more efficient than gas storage hot water?
Yes and No. Typically a continuous flow uses 5% less gas than a gas storage system. However, the gas storage system does not require electricity to operate and helps reduce water consumption. Water is expensive. Therefore it also costs more to own and operate a gas continuous flow hot water system.
Is an instant gas hot water better than a gas storage hot water system?
A)1 – Firstly, there is actually really no such thing as instant gas hot water. What is now known as gas continuous flow was once known as instant gas. The ACCC made manufacturers change the name as the term instant gas was misleading advertising.
A)2- It actually takes longer to get hot water from a continuous flow hot water system than it does a storage hot water system. For an average family 15,000 -20,000 litres of additional water is lost down the drain every year while waiting for the water to heat up.
A)3 – While it takes longer to get hot water from a continuous flow gas hot water system, the amount of hot water you can have is endless. However, the more hot water you try to use at once the lower the water temperature is likely to be.

Maintenance Of Pressure Relief Valves
How often should I operate my pressure relief valve?
This is a safety valve. The lever on the valve should be pulled once every 6 months to allow water to flow freely for 10 seconds. The valve should be replaced by a licensed plumber once every 5 years.
Hot Water System Repairs & Servicing
Who can repair or service my hot water system?
A)1 – Only Plumbers can fix water related issues such as leaks, replacing valves, fix knocking pipes and change anodes.
A)2 – Only licensed plumbers with a restricted electrical licence or a licensed electrician can repair or service the electrical components of your hot water system.
A)3 – Only licensed plumbers with an appropriate gas licence can repair & service the gas components of your hot water system.
